Knit Turtle Hat

h1 Saturday, July 28th, 2007

I recently finished a Favorite Animal Swap on Craftster.  My partner was baby-bumblebee and her favorite animals were turtles, penguins, and kitties.  Easy, I thought, this hat will go so quickly.  But I was wrong.  For some reason it seemed to take ages and ages (though I was working on size 7 needles).  I could have sworn that some malevolent knitter was unraveling a few rows every time I turned my back.  Stitches kept jumping off the knitting needles because the stress was too great.  Whenever I switched to a different double-pointed, those stitches had to be forced back on, though they did fight me (a few times a crochet hook had to be introduced as “encouragement”).

Finally, I drew the yarn needle through the last six stitches and finished that hat.  The hexagon motifs were made using a stamp my mom had used for her “Not Your Grandmother’s Flower Garden” quilt.  Unlike the actual hat, sewing on these little green shapes took little time.

I now present you to the Turtle Hat:

I’ll post the other swap items at another time.  They didn’t take nearly as long, granted that wasn’t hard to do.

Swamp Magic

h1 Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

The past two days I have spent knitting for The Everything Harry Potter Swap over at Craftster, so I haven’t been spinning a lot. It’s ironic that no matter how much I spin, I still knit with commercial yarn. xP My stash is currently taking up four bins of varying sizes.

My newest yarn: Swamp Magic. I spun it from a batt I bought from hobbledehoy, which was the first time I have spun from a batt. It is so very sparkley and also squishy. A 164 yd single that is about worsted weight.

Kittens. Adorable. I swear that they only grow longer and fatter, and no taller. These kittens are so much fun, though we still have to keep them separate from the doggies. Oliver is fine with them, though Rocky (the bigger kitty) is scared witless of them.

(I love how they seem to be wearing eye liner!)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–At last!

h1 Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

At 1:24 am this morning, I finished the last Harry Potter book.  It was different than I thought it would be, but satisfying none the less.  Now I am listening to the audio CDs (read by Jim Dale) while I knit my DNA Tank Top.  It was great and I finished the back of the shirt today (after working off and on for a month–more off than on).

If I can manage it, I will finish the front soon.  The front is much more time consuming with cabling and two different lace patterns.  Never done a cable before (other than a twist or two) but not too worried about it.  It will be keeping with the project that is the trial.

Tour de Fleece

h1 Friday, July 20th, 2007

I’ve been spinning almost every day for the Tour de Fleece!  I’ve got a lot of new yarn, though my favorite has to be Wildflowers.  It’s 294 yards of almost-worsted weight.

Also, here is Puking Rainbows, 60 yards.  I just love that name, though it sounds grotesque.  A two-ply that is plied with thread in the colors of the rainbow.

Getting Harry Potter tonight at midnight!

I’m going with my friend and family to wait in line: It is gonna be so fun!  I look forward to it, but it is the last, so I’ve got feelings of sadness.  After I finish the book, I still have to see the movie (Order of the Phoenix).  So far, the movies have not been the best… but maybe this will be different.
